Ozone and Air Purifiers
- Behind The Story

Air Purifiers that use ozone have come under fire of late.

The problem stems from the fact that some manufacturers of ozone generators first advertised and sold the ozone systems as “In the Home Air Cleaners”.

Typically an ozone generator is a machine that simulates lightning by a corona electric arc or spark. Thus the name "Corona Discharge System". Strong ozone occurs through this conversion of oxygen to ozone. These units well exceed the limit of .05ppm which is the current limit the Federal Government has placed home air purifiers. Corona Discharge was never meant to be used in the vicinity of people; this form of ozone air cleaner is to be used strictly in unoccupied areas of very high contamination. The companies that sold these units as air purifiers succeeded in creating a skewed public perception and in giving ozone a very bad name.
To improve this situation other manufacturers have sought out different means of utilizing ozone as an air purifier
mainly by way of a UV-C ozone lamp. Although it brings the level of ozone produced way down, the method remains highly unregulated and will still manufacture ozone above the federal limit of .05ppm in some cases. This continued inability to harness ozone gas recently brought the ozone air purification industry under fire again.

In September of 2007, California approved a ban on all Air Cleaner Brands that
produce ozone above the Federal limit. California Assembly Bill 2276 (2006, Pavley), signed by Governor Schwarzenegger in September 2006, directs the Air Resource Board (ARB) to develop and adopt a regulation to limit the ozone emitted from indoor air cleaning devices in order to protect public health. The bill requires the ARB to adopt the regulation by December 31, 2008.

These indiscretions and oversteps in the ozone air purification industry have overshadowed and seemed to be on route to cripple research on other methods of ozone cleaning technologies that have proved to be safe and more effective.

AHPCO(advanced hydrated photo catalytic oxidation)
is one such technology. This process exposes a metallic photocatalyst to a UV-C Ozone lamp in a moist atmosphere.
The result is a reaction
that converts the ozone into hydyoxl ions and hydoperoxide ions to name a couple. These "AHPCO" chambers succeed in utilizing the powerful oxidizing qualities of ozone to purge the air of impurities while maintaining a level of only .01 to .02ppm. Well under the current Federal limit of .05ppm. What's more is the conversion of O3 into hydroxls, hydroperoxides, and super oxide ions which are individually each a more powerful air cleaner than ozone. Combined they are a massive force in the fight against Indoor Air Pollution. Time will tell whether or not this important technology will get "lumped in" with the other ozone type air purifiers that are being targeted by the EPA of California.

The company at the forefront of bringing this technology to the marketplace is "Air Oasis". Their mark is a unique "nano-catalyst" which is a propiatery blend of metals and nanotechnology. The catalyst is said to give the the air cleaning oxidizers and ions an
unprecedented “shelf-life”.

A proven way to harness the capacity of ozone to provide a safe healthy environment to breathe in.
